If you teach a toy release it will eventually work to release anything. Shaping the behavior gradually, and the cue will become a release cue for anything. Here's a breakdown of the process:
1. Begin by shaping the behavior of releasing the toy without using the cue word. Gradually guide your dog through the process using techniques demonstrated in instructional videos.
2. If needed you can start with food to encourage the release, decrease the food rewards as your dog becomes more adept at the game. Make the toy more enticing by incorporating movement, sounds, and playful behavior.
3. When the release is consistent you will introduce Cue Word: Choose a cue word, such as "OUT," "DROP," or "GIVE"
- After the grab you can allow the tug session to continue for 10 to 20 seconds before asking for the DROP/OUT.
- NO teeth on human skin or your clothing while playing tug - STOP if this happens.
- Wait or ask for polite behavior before the toy games begin.
- In between repetitions, consider increasing the behavior chains of tasks such as SIT, DOWN or SIT, SPIN then GET IT! or DOWN, TOUCH, then GET IT!
As long as you are gradual in what you are asking for. Anytime they do not succeed, slow down your expectations, lower the criteria and ask for something simple⦠add in a TOUCH cue to get your Pup back on track touching your hand and getting a reward.
Tugging can be a great way to teach a dog important lessons, such as how to listen to cues even when they are excited. The energy of the game creates faster behaviors. The big benefit is that it is more mentally taxing, when done in this order. This is exactly what your high energy Pup wants and needs.
You can teach your dog a release cue for everything and have fun at the same time.
Practice in this order to GENERALIZE the behavior:
π² INSIDE IN A QUIET SMALL SPACE ( BATHROOMS ARE IDEAL TO START IN)
π² IN MULTIPLE ROOMS
π² YOU IN MULTIPLE POSITIONS
π² THEN OUTSIDE
π² IN THE BACK YARD
π² IN THE FRONT YARD
π² IN THE NEIGHBORS DRIVEWAY
