Dog Training is a Conversation

Dogs are incredibly perceptive—they often understand our body language better than we understand theirs. By investing time in learning their signals, you'll be amazed at how quickly your communication improves, deepening your bond.

📗 Beginner: Calming, Displacement & Stress Signals

Watch for these common signs of stress:

  • Lip licking
  • Looking away
  • Whale eye (half-moon eyes)
  • Ears pinned back
  • Stiff body posture
  • Yawning
  • Shake-offs
  • Tucked tail
  • Tail wagging high and fast

For example:

  • A wagging tail isn’t always a sign of happiness. A stiff tail wag with tension in the body can signal anxiety or arousal.
  • Hackles raised (piloerection) can indicate a reaction to a perceived threat, making the dog appear larger.

Learning these subtle signals allows you to understand your dog’s emotions and set them up for success in stressful situations.

📒 Intermediate: Additional Signals to Watch For

  • Paw lifts
  • Frequent blinking
  • Tension in the face or body
  • Teeth chattering
  • Sweaty paws
  • Excessive sniffing or scratching
  • Fidgeting or frustration behaviors

When in doubt, observe the entire body in context. As you practice, your ability to interpret your dog’s feelings will improve, allowing you to better support their needs.
